This breed is a recent attempt to recreate the form of the original working Bulldog, before it was modified for the show-ring. The breeding programme was undertaken by Ken Mollett who, over a period of two decades, has bred back to the longer-leg version that was popular in the days before bull-baiting was banned.

An owner of one of these dogs comments: “My Victorian Bulldog can run miles, lay in the sun and suffer no wrinkle sores or breathing problems. He looks identical to the Bulldog of the 19th century.”

Mollett himself describes it as ‘the Real Bulldog… athletic, healthy and sweet- natured'… doesn't snort and snore… can run a country mile … doesn't sleep and slobber away a perfectly fine day… the bulldog has come home'. It is no surprise that breeders of the modern English Bulldog refer to the Victorian Bulldog dismissively as ‘a mixed breed dog'.
